In the early 1900s, Kalimpong Town Started getting worldwide fame as it had the ever important “Silk Route” which was used by merchants to transport trade goods from Tibet to Kalimpong and vice-versa. Seeing the status of Kalimpong skyrocket, the British decided to promote Kalimpong into a subdivision of Darjeeling District. To put an administrative machinery into place, a Sub Divisional Officer was appointed and finally in 1920, the Kalimpong Police Station was established at the heart of the town. Kalimpong Police Station has stood strong for these many years at its original place. Much later after the Independence of India, several other police stations such as Gorubathan PS and Jaldhaka PS were established with the aim of reaching more remote places which were too far away from the main town. Before Kalimpong was made a separate district, it was under the Jurisdiction of Darjeeling Police and was overseen by the then Addl. SP, Kalimpong under the supervision of Superintendent of Police, Darjeeling
In the year 2017, the Honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, out of genuine love and appreciation for Kalimpong, upgraded Kalimpong into a district after which it has been put on the fast track to development. Thus, Kalimpong Police was also separated from Darjeeling Police and came into existence as an Independent District Police with its jurisdiction spanning over the entire Kalimpong District.
As of now, there are two police sub-divisions namely Kalimpong and Gorubathan, Eight (08) Police Stations namely Kalimpong P.S, Gorubathan P.S., Jaldhaka P.S., Women P.S, Cyber Crime P.S, Reang P.S, Pedong PS, and Lava PS, three development blocks viz. Kalimpong-I, Kalimpong-II and Gorubathan. SP Kalimpong assisted by Addl. SP Kalimpong, SDPO Gorubathan and the Dy. SPs is supervising these units. This District is in the range of Deputy Inspector General of Police, Darjeeling and under the supervision of ADG/IG North Bengal.
